Happiness in Hard Times

Kim So-Woon

It is a matter of course that we forget hard times when our lives get better.

The earlier we forget, the better off we would be, because no one would want to be poor. However, even tough times have something to offer: beautiful memories as splendid as the morning dew. The following stories are about two poor couples, which are old but still touch me with renewed inspiration.
There is a poor newly married couple. It is common to see men at work and women at home but the situation was actually the opposite for this couple. The man was staying home, while his wife was working in a company close to the house.
One morning, they ran out of rice and she went to work without having breakfast.
“I will come up with something until lunch time. Just hold on by then.”
The husband said as he saw her off. When the wife came back home for lunch, she couldn’t find her husband, but there was her lunch, covered by a piece of newspaper on the table. When she silently uncovered the table, she saw a bowl of warm rice and a small cup of soy sauce. Her husband was able to manage to get rice, but he must have had difficulties to get anything more. As she was grabbing her spoon, she noticed a piece of paper on the table.
“A queen’s bowl of rice, a beggar’s side dishes. Hopefully this meal will be fine for the time being.”
It was her husband’s familiar handwriting. She burst into tears. She was as happy as being a queen. She was so grateful for the priceless happiness.

Next story is also about a poor couple: a poet and his wife. Here is a story of their early days.

One morning, after washing his face, the poet was waiting for breakfast to be served when his wife brought in a couple of steamed sweet potatoes on a tray.
“I bought them because the downstairs neighbor talked so much about the freshly harvest sweet potatoes. Try some.”
He had never liked sweet potatoes and he didn’t feel like eating anything before having a meal. However, just to please his wife, he picked and ate the smallest, with a black tea which was also on the tray.
“You don’t eat only a piece. Please get one more.”
The wife offered him one more, smiling. Unwillingly, he had another one. It was already time for him to leave.
“I have to leave soon. Let’s have breakfast.” He said hastily.
“You are having breakfast now. These sweet potatoes are our breakfast.”
“Really?”
When he finally realized that there was no rice left at home, his face turned red because he was sorry and embarrassed.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier we run out of rice? You are embarrassing your husband.”
He snapped.
“I have an uncle who is a high ranking official in the government. Finding us a bag of rice is a piece of cake for him but we still have a long life ahead. We will be smiling when talking about today’s anecdote later.”
In front of her, who was smiling gently, he couldn’t say a word. His heart was filled with indescribable happiness.
It is better not to forget tough time of the poor past. Indeed, we shouldn’t forget that love helped us get through those difficult moments. “Money can’t buy happiness” is not merely an old saying. 20151023
